In a bid to regain control of the increasingly divided Conservative Party, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s government has announced a comprehensive crackdown on record-high net migration. On Monday, the UK government unveiled a series of strict visa rules aimed at curbing the influx of foreign workers and reducing the nation’s immigration numbers.
The newly proposed regulations include a substantial increase in the salary threshold for foreign workers to qualify for skilled visas. Additionally, the government plans to tighten restrictions on bringing family members as dependents, signaling a significant shift in immigration policies.
Taking to microblogging site X, he wrote, “Immigration is too high. Today we’re taking radical action to bring it down. These steps will make sure that immigration always benefits the UK.” In another online statement, Sunak said, “We’ve just announced the biggest ever cut in net migration. No Prime Minister has done this before in history.”
UK Home Secretary James Cleverly revealed a comprehensive immigration crackdown, impacting not only Bharatiya but also imposing significant restrictions on medics holding Health and Care visas. Speaking in the House of Commons, Cleverly disclosed that medics on these visas would no longer be permitted to bring family members. The package, coupled with a reduction in student dependents, is anticipated to result in approximately 300,000 fewer individuals coming to the UK in the future compared to the previous year.
The ambitious five-point plan outlined by Cleverly is slated to take effect in the first half of 2024, marking a pivotal moment in the government’s approach to immigration. The announcement comes following Cleverly’s recent appointment to the Home Office, signaling a determined effort to reshape immigration policies and address concerns related to population influx.
