Kenya and India strengthened their ties during a visit by the Kenyan President, William Samoei Ruto. The visit resulted in the signing of five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and collaborations across various sectors. Notably, Kenya offered agricultural farmland to Indian companies, emphasizing cooperation in farming activities.
In the education sector, agreements were made between the open universities of both nations, fostering collaboration in cultural, sports, digital solutions, and digital transformation initiatives. The Kenyan President expressed interest in learning from India, particularly in fintech, space, UPI, Aadhaar, and health, with a focus on exchanging medical expertise.
The economic landscape saw significant developments, including an increased line of credit for agriculture modernization in Kenya and a customized training program for Kenyan space scientists by ISRO. India also committed to developing a geospatial information portal for Kenya. Additionally, Kenya expressed interest in joining the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuel Alliance.
India’s successful G20 presidency, securing permanent membership for the African Union, was acknowledged. The historical relationship between India and Kenya was highlighted, with ongoing institutional frameworks and development partnerships. Bilateral trade stands at USD 3.3 billion, showcasing economic vibrancy, and the upcoming India-Kenya Business and Investment Forum aims to enhance economic cooperation.
Defence cooperation remains robust, with initiatives in maritime collaboration and hydrography. The India-Kenya Joint Vision Statement on maritime cooperation was issued, reflecting the enduring strength of their defense ties. The Business and Investment Forum will further facilitate interactions, encouraging increased Indian investments in Kenya. The day also included discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President William Ruto on deepening the partnership between the two countries.
