The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has officially charged five individuals associated with the Islamic State of Khorasan Province (ISKP), an affiliate of the global terrorist group ISIS. The charge-sheet, filed in a special court in Gujarat, includes Ubaid Nasir Mir, Hanan Hayat Shawl, Mohd Hazim Shah, Sumera Banu, and Zubair. The group had intentions to illegally travel to Afghanistan through Iran from Gujarat’s Porbandar. The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested them.
The investigation revealed that these individuals were actively involved with ISKP, operating in the Khorasan province of Afghanistan. Their planned activities included traveling to Afghanistan for training and carrying out terrorist acts. The arrested individuals were engaged in recruiting Muslim youth for the violent agenda of ISKP. Besides propagating ISKP’s ideology on social media, they were actively involved in motivating, radicalizing, and indoctrinating vulnerable Muslim youth in India. Additionally, they were collecting funds for the banned terror organization.
Two other accused are currently on the run and believed to be in Afghanistan and Iran. These absconders are suspected to be the handlers of the arrested individuals. Due to national security implications and international connections, the Ministry of Home Affairs transferred the case to the NIA on June 28. The NIA registered the case on July 1, incorporating various sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Indian Penal Code, based on the FIR filed by the ATS in Ahmedabad. The NIA is actively continuing its investigations in the case.
