Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced two significant measures for flood-affected Tamil Nadu, where Defence Minister Rajnath Singh conducted an aerial survey of the impacted districts. Shah released Rs.450 crore as the second instalment of the State Disaster Response Fund in advance for relief efforts. Additionally, he sanctioned the first Urban Flood Mitigation Project worth Rs.561.29 crore for integrated urban flood management activities in the Chennai Basin Project under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund.
Expressing concern for those affected by severe cyclonic storm Michaung in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, Shah mentioned varied damage extents and inundated areas affecting standing crops. Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to release the central share of the 2nd instalment of SDRF to Andhra Pradesh and Rs.450 crore to Tamil Nadu in advance to aid relief efforts.
Amit Shah emphasized the proactive approach guided by PM Modi in addressing flooding issues in metropolitan cities. The Urban Flood Mitigation Project for Chennai, the first in a series, aims to make the city flood-resilient. Shah stated that this project aligns with a broader framework for urban flood management, acknowledging the increasing instances of excessive rainfall leading to sudden flooding in cities.
After the aerial survey, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met Chief Minister MK Stalin to discuss the situation. The CM is expected to seek immediate financial assistance to cope with the aftermath of the floods.
