The Bharatiya ambassador gained consular access to meet the eight Indians sentenced to death in Qatar on December 3. Two hearings have occurred, and appeals were filed by both the families and the detainees. The sentences were given to eight employees of Al Dahra Global Technologies, a private firm in Qatar.
They were held in Qatar since August the previous year. Bharat strongly opposed the verdict, filed an appeal, and assured comprehensive legal and consular assistance.
The External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, stated that the ambassador had consular access to meet all eight individuals in prison on December 3. Despite the sensitivity of the matter, Bharat continues to closely follow it and provide relevant updates.
The Qatar court’s decision was labeled “deeply” shocking by Bharat, prompting a commitment to explore all legal avenues. A higher court in Qatar has accepted the appeal filed by the legal team of the detained Indians.
Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on the sidelines of the COP28 summit in Dubai, and discussed bilateral partnership and the well-being of the Bhartiya community in the oil-rich country.
