The pitch at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, known for hosting the ODI World Cup 2023 final between Bharat and Australia on November 19th, has received an ‘average’ rating from the International Cricket Council (ICC), as reported by ESPNcricinfo. The ICC assessed pitch and outfield ratings for eight matches of the World Cup, with five Bharat venues receiving an overall ‘average’ rating.
Notably, the final match and the highly anticipated Bharat-Pakistan game both took place at Narendra Modi Stadium, both of which received an ‘average’ rating based on the recommendation of the ICC’s pitch consultant, Andy Atkinson. Additionally, the pitch at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, hosting the second semi-final between Australia and South Africa, also received an ‘average’ rating. Eden Gardens received the most ‘average’ ratings among all World Cup 2023 venues in Bharat, with a total of five.
Contrastingly, Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, where the first semi-final occurred between Bharat and New Zealand, was rated ‘good’ by the ICC. In that match, the ‘Men in Blue’ secured a 70-run victory.
The International Cricket Council uses a rating system for pitches and outfields, categorizing them as very good, good, average, below average, poor, or unfit. The assessment helps gauge the quality of playing conditions for international matches.
Recapping the ODI World Cup 2023 final at Narendra Modi Stadium, Bharat faced challenges on a challenging batting surface after Australia chose to field first. Despite fifties from KL Rahul (66) and Virat Kohli (54), Bharat was bowled out for 240 in 50 overs. In the pursuit of 241, Travis Head’s century (137) and Marnus Labuschagne’s contribution (58*) guided Australia to their sixth World Cup title at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
