Sad news in the cricket world: Joe Solomon, a former West Indies player, passed away at the age of 93 on Saturday. He was well-known for a crucial run-out that led to the famous tied Test in 1960 at the Gabba. Windies Cricket shared their condolences, remembering Solomon’s contributions to the game.
During his career, Solomon played 27 Tests for the West Indies from 1958 to 1965, scoring 1326 runs with an average of 34. Despite starting his first-class cricket at 26, he quickly earned a spot in the squad. Solomon made a remarkable entry with three consecutive centuries in his first three innings against Jamaica, Barbados, and the touring Pakistan. In his fourth Test against India, he scored an unbeaten 100 in Delhi.
Solomon’s most memorable moment came in the tied Test against Australia in 1960 at the Gabba. With a nail-biting finish, Solomon’s accurate throw caught Ian Meckiff short of his crease, resulting in the first-ever tied Test. While he made valuable runs in that Test, his batting on the tour also stirred a bit of controversy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground when he was out hit-wicket as his cap fell on the stumps.
Joe Solomon’s contributions to West Indies cricket, both in skill and memorable moments, will be remembered fondly by fans. May he Rest in Peace.
