Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested a new idea called “Wed in Bharat,” encouraging people to choose domestic locations for weddings instead of going abroad. This initiative aims to bring back around Rs 1 lakh crore to the country, which is usually spent on destination weddings overseas. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has praised this initiative, comparing it to the successful “Make in India” campaign, and sees it as a strategic move to prevent unnecessary outflows of money from Bharat.
During his monthly “Man Ki Baat” on November 26, the Prime Minister introduced the concept of “Wed in Bharat” and urged citizens to consider having destination weddings within the country. Since then, CAIT has actively promoted this idea among businesses and society throughout Bharat. While there is no official survey on the number of destination weddings abroad, it is estimated that around 5,000 such weddings take place annually, with expenses ranging from Rs 75,000 crore to Rs 1 lakh crore.
CAIT National President BC Bhartia and Secretary Praveen Khandelwal pointed out that Bharat has over 2,000 potential locations in about 100 major cities across different states suitable for hosting grand destination weddings. Cities like Goa, Mumbai, Jaipur, Udaipur, Chennai, and Delhi are among the notable options. The leaders emphasized that redirecting destination weddings from foreign countries to domestic venues could significantly boost the country’s economy.
Bhartia and Khandelwal urged the affluent class to lead this shift, believing that others would follow suit, ultimately contributing to the growth of Bharat’s wedding industry. They highlighted the diverse range of venues available in different budget categories, offering comprehensive facilities and arrangements through various specialized companies and groups in the wedding industry.
Over the years, Bharat has built a strong network in the wedding industry, making wedding-related goods and services a significant economic contributor. The CAIT leaders emphasized that hosting destination weddings in Bharat would not only preserve Bharat values but also provide a substantial boost to the nation’s business and economy. This initiative aligns with PM Modi’s call to keep Bharat’s wealth within the country, fostering economic growth and creating more job opportunities for the people.
