In 1857, the First War of Independence happened, and Veer Narayan Singh played a crucial role in Chhattisgarh’s fight against the British. He died on December 10, 1857. Now, on the 166th anniversary of his death in 2023, Vishnudeo Sai, a prominent tribal leader, becomes the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh.
So, this day is going to be memorable for the state, which has a lot of tribal people. It marks a strong comeback of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh against the targeting, killing, and conversion of tribal people influenced by the church. The new Chief Minister, Vishnudeo Sai, shares similar beliefs with the late Veer Narayan Singh.
Born in 1796 in Sonakhan, Chhattisgarh, in the binjhwar tribal community, Shahid Veer Narayan Singh is a notable figure in Bharat history. He played a big role in helping the poor and marginalized communities, often seen as a Robin Hood of Bharat. During severe famines, he took from the traders’ grain stock and gave it to the needy.
Veer Narayan Singh didn’t just fight for freedom; he also helped Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) in a big way. By standing up against unfair rules, he made sure everyone got a fair chance, making a lasting difference for those who needed it most.
In his first speech, Chief Minister Vishnudeo Sai assured that all promises from the ‘Modi ki guarantee’ in the election plans will be kept, starting with approving 18 lakh houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Additionally, on Atal ji’s birthday on December 25, farmers in the state will receive a 2-year bonus. This connects with the ideas of Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh, who was dedicated to helping the underprivileged.
Shahid Veer Narayan Singh’s bravery and sacrifice are not only cherished by the people of Chhattisgarh but also honored through various government initiatives. The Chhattisgarh government established the “Shahid Veer Narayan Singh Samman” to recognize and remember his contributions to the freedom struggle. This award is given to individuals who show exceptional courage, dedication, and service to the state, especially in uplifting tribal and other backward communities.
To honor his sacrifice, the government released a postal ticket with Veer Narayan Singh’s picture. Chhattisgarh went a step further by naming an international stadium after him, showing the state’s pride in its history of strength and resistance. Besides these efforts, the government keeps acknowledging and celebrating Veer Narayan Singh’s legacy through cultural and educational programs.
In the 2023 Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took a strong lead and secured a clear victory, making Vishnudeo Sai, a prominent tribal leader, the Chief Minister of the state.
It’s not just chance that on the 166th death anniversary of Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh, Tribal leader Vishnudeo Sai becomes the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh on December 10, 2023. It’s a meaningful link connecting the legacy of the late leader to the start of a new era.

Moving to larger roles, he served as an MLA from Tapkara from 1990 to 1998. In 1999, he became an MP in the Raigarh Lok Sabha.
