In a major setback for the United States President, Joe Biden, the House of Representatives on Wednesday voted in favour of formally opening an impeachment inquiry into the US President. With this, the House has officially pushed forward Republicans’ yearlong investigation into Biden, that as of now has failed to produce evidence of any high crimes or misdemeanours against him.
The vote in favour of opening the impeachment inquiry, according to Republicans, was needed to give them full authority to continue carrying out their investigation amid the anticipated legal challenges from the White House. Meanwhile, democrats have denounced the inquiry into Joe Biden, calling it a Fishing Expedition and a Political Stunt.
Notably, GOP leaders refrained for months from calling a vote to open impeachment inquiry against Joe Biden, as many among the Republicans felt that he did nothing wrong. However, today’s 221-212 vote underscores how the political ground has shifted, as the Republicans voted in favour of opening impeachment inquiry into Joe Biden in huge numbers.
Not long after, President Joe Biden released a statement, saying that Instead of doing anything to help make Americans’ lives better, the Republicans are focused on attacking me with lies. He further added that instead of doing their jobs, the House is choosing to waste time on baseless political stunts.
The Chair of Rules Committee, Rep. Tom Cole said that since September, the House has been engaged in an impeachment inquiry and examining whether there are sufficient grounds to impeach the President of the United States. Furthermore, he added that Today’s resolution simply formalises that inquiry.
The current vote in the House does not accuse President Biden of any wrongdoing, rather, it authorises the Republic-led panel to continue their investigations and look for evidence against him.
