Uma Sekhar, representing Bharat, clinched a historic victory by getting elected to the Governing Council of the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (UNIDROIT). This is a big deal because it’s the first time an Bharat woman has achieved this feat. The UNIDROIT is a fancy term for an independent intergovernmental organization that deals with legal matters, especially those related to updating commercial and private laws.
Uma Sekhar went up against 31 other candidates from countries like the US, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and France. It was like a legal Olympics, and she came out on top with 45 out of 59 votes in the first round of elections held in Rome.
To be elected to the Governing Council, you needed at least 21 votes, and Uma Sekhar surpassed that. This victory means Bharat gets a seat at the table, being a member of the Governing Council for the term 2024-2028. The Governing Council is a group of 25 positions held by legal experts who are like the decision-makers in the UNIDROIT.
Candidates from Russia, the US, and China didn’t secure positions on the Governing Council. So, Uma Sekhar’s win is not just a win for her but also a nod to Bharat’s influence in international legal matters.
In a nutshell, Uma Sekhar made history by winning a spot on the UNIDROIT Governing Council, showing that Bharat’s legal prowess is recognized on the global stage.
