In the Lok Sabha, 33 Members of Parliament (MPs) have been suspended for the rest of the winter session. Among them, K Jayakumar, Vijay Vasanth, and Abdul Khaleque face suspension duration determined by the privilege committee. The suspension came after these three individuals climbed onto the dais where the Speaker’s chair is located, leading to the adjournment of the House for the day.
Moving to the Rajya Sabha, amidst opposition uproar related to the Lok Sabha security breach, the J&K Reorganisation (Second Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill were passed. These bills aim to enhance the representation of women in the legislative assemblies of Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir. However, the chaotic scenes persisted in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, resulting in swift adjournments. Opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha chanted for the BJP to provide answers and cease avoiding Parliament.
Earlier in the day, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a Congress MP and leader of the party in Lok Sabha, called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address Parliament regarding the security breach, criticizing the delayed response. Chowdhury had previously written to Speaker Om Birla, urging the rescinding of the suspension of 13 Opposition members. He argued that these MPs raised significant concerns in the aftermath of the security breach and deserve a fair hearing.
