The Rajya Sabha had to take a timeout until noon on Tuesday because things got a bit chaotic. The Opposition MPs were not happy about their 45 colleagues getting suspended on Monday, so they decided to make their objections known through protests and slogans during the ‘Zero Hour’.
The Chairman, Jagdeep Dhankhar, tried to keep things in check and urged everyone to cooperate, but it didn’t quite work. He even turned down four notices from the Opposition MPs, saying they weren’t valid. With the protest persisting, the Chairman adjourned the House until noon.
The reason for the uproar was the suspension of a whopping 45 Opposition MPs in the Rajya Sabha on Monday. It’s a significant move, marking the largest suspension of MPs in the history of the Upper House. Out of these, 34 are suspended for the rest of the Winter Session, which ends on December 22, while 11 face suspension until the Rajya Sabha’s Committee of Privileges finishes its report.
The suspended MPs cover a range of political affiliations. From the Congress party, notable names like Jairam Ramesh and Randeep Singh Surjewala faced suspension. TMC’s Sukhendu Sekhar Ray and CPI (M’s) V. Sivadasan also found themselves on the suspended list. The reasons for suspension varied, with some facing it until the end of the Winter Session and others pending the committee’s report.
In total, 46 Rajya Sabha MPs faced suspension during this Winter Session. This includes Derek O’Brien from TMC, who was suspended earlier. The situation escalated after 33 members were suspended from the Lok Sabha on Monday for “misconduct” throughout the remainder of the monsoon session. It seems like it’s been a stormy session in the Parliament.
