In preparations for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party has established a five-member National Alliance Committee to explore potential alliances with other political parties. The committee, formed by the Congress president, aims to strengthen the party’s position and collaboration ahead of the general elections.
The National Alliance Committee comprises prominent leaders such as Mukul Wasnik, Ashok Gehlot, Bhupesh Baghel, Salman Khurshid, and Mohan Prakash. Their primary task is to engage in discussions with various political entities to form a united front against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Simultaneously, the ‘Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc,’ led by the Congress, is currently holding its fourth meeting in the national capital. This gathering occurs amidst heightened political tensions between the Opposition and the BJP-led central government, particularly concerning the demand for Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement regarding the Parliament security breach.
In response to the recent suspension of 141 MPs from Parliament, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, currently in the national capital, expressed concern over the stifling of voices. She emphasized the need for a thorough discussion on seat-sharing among political parties and hinted at a possible consensus on one-to-one seat sharing, with some exceptions.
Mamata Banerjee asserted that the prevailing political situation calls for unity among opposition parties and criticized the suspension of MPs as a mockery of democracy. She is optimistic about reaching an agreement on seat-sharing and believes that the delay in the process is acceptable, stating, “Better late than never.”
The INDIA alliance, formed with the goal of presenting a collective challenge to the NDA in the upcoming elections, has been actively engaged in discussions since its inception. The alliance has resolved to collectively contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and is working towards finalizing seat-sharing arrangements through a spirit of cooperation and compromise.
As the Lok Sabha polls draw nearer, discussions on seat-sharing are expected to take center stage in INDIA bloc meetings. The outcome of these discussions will be crucial for the Congress, particularly in the aftermath of electoral setbacks in states like Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh. The alliance aims to present a united front and consolidate its position for a formidable challenge in the upcoming elections.
