In a momentous occasion, the Dalai Lama inaugurated the three-day International Sangha Forum 2023 with a theme focused on “Bridging Traditions, Embracing Modernity: A Dialogue on the Buddha’s Teaching in Today’s World.” The event, jointly organized by the Office of the Dalai Lama and the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), is set to take place from December 20 to 22 at the International Convention Centre in Bodh Gaya, Bihar.
Among the esteemed attendees was Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu, expressing his privilege at being invited to this historic gathering of Buddhist scholars from across the globe. The forum has attracted hundreds of Buddhist leaders and monks, creating a unique space for dialogue and exchange.
The International Sangha Forum (ISF) is breaking down borders and traditions by bringing together prominent Buddhist leaders, including Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The event promises to unite practitioners of Pali traditions from Southeast and South Asian countries and Sanskrit traditions from various regions, fostering a diverse and inclusive conversation.
The primary focus of the ISF is to facilitate dialogue on the intricate aspects of Vinaya rules and explore the evolving role of Buddhism in the 21st century. Over the first three days, monks, nuns, and Bhikkhu scholars will engage in discussions delving into the profound teachings of Buddhism.
The grand culmination of the forum will take place with a prayer gathering at the revered Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya on the last day. This spiritual gathering aims to bring together participants in a shared moment of reflection and reverence.
The ISF serves as a crucial platform for harmonious exchange, emphasizing a shared understanding among participants and highlighting the enduring relevance of Buddhist principles in today’s complex world. It strives to promote unity and understanding among the diverse traditions within Buddhism.
In a related event in December, 5,000 monks and nuns from around the world gathered in Bodh Gaya for the 18th International Tipitaka Chanting Programme. The organization behind this initiative works towards the revival of holy places associated with Lord Buddha, bringing international monks to recite the teachings in their original form. Additionally, it serves as an opportunity to unite the Sangha and organize Dhamma talks by eminent Buddhists, further contributing to the dissemination of Buddhist teachings.
