In a recent address to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) cadre in Islamabad, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif praised Bharat and acknowledged that neighboring countries have achieved significant milestones, including reaching the moon. Sharif expressed concern over Pakistan’s economic struggles, stating that while others have soared to new heights, Pakistan has yet to lift itself from the ground. He emphasized that the responsibility for the country’s challenges lies within, attributing its own downfall to internal factors.
Sharif Reflects on Past Achievements and Challenges During PML-N’s Tenure
Running for the prime ministerial position for the fourth time, Nawaz Sharif highlighted the positive developments during the PML-N’s previous tenure. He recalled addressing issues such as severe electricity load shedding, combating terrorism, restoring peace in Karachi, constructing highways, and initiating the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Sharif emphasized that the nation experienced a period of development and prosperity during their governance.
Ouster and Accountability Issues
Nawaz Sharif, ousted from power three times (1993, 1999, and 2017), questioned the current crises in Pakistan and admitted to self-inflicted wounds, stating, “We shot ourselves in our foot.” He pointed out the low inflation and affordable food prices during his government in 2014, contrasting them with the present economic challenges. Sharif also addressed what he termed as “fake cases” against him and other PML-N leaders, with convictions in two cases overturned by the Islamabad High Court after three hearings.
Call for Women’s Development and Accountability
In his address, Sharif urged Pakistan to prioritize women’s development as a crucial step towards national progress. He emphasized the need for women to be equal participants in the development process, working alongside men. Additionally, he reiterated his call for accountability for those responsible for his ouster in 2017, expressing a desire for the conspirators to be brought forward and held accountable.
Nawaz Sharif’s recent statements reflect both a recognition of external achievements and an acknowledgment of internal challenges, emphasizing the importance of self-reflection and accountability for a nation’s progress.
