In a bold move, members of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc, part of the opposition in the Bharatiya Parliament, undertook a protest march from Parliament House to Vijay Chowk in the national capital. The demonstration aimed to address the recent suspension of members in both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.
During the protest, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge spoke to the media, accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of intentionally disrupting parliamentary proceedings. Kharge highlighted a unique incident where a significant number of BJP MPs in the Rajya Sabha raised slogans against a group of 10 members while the parliamentary affairs minister was delivering a speech.
Kharge emphasized that the protest was directed against the government, asserting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the chief of the house seemed uninterested in the smooth functioning of the Parliament. He criticized the ruling party for attempting to introduce casteism into the discourse and stressed the elected representatives’ democratic right and duty to voice the concerns of the people.
Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, Kharge expressed disappointment over their silence on the recent security breach in the Parliament. He questioned their reluctance to provide details about the incident, urging transparency and accountability. Kharge lamented the absence of statements from the key leaders, noting that the prime minister seemed more focused on addressing issues outside the Parliament.
In response to the ongoing situation, members of the INDIA bloc announced plans for a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Friday. Several leaders from the bloc are expected to participate in the demonstration to further highlight their grievances.
The parliamentary session has witnessed heightened tensions, with the recent suspension of two more Opposition MPs—Thomas Chazhikadan of the Kerala Congress (Mani) and A M Ariff of the CPI(M). Their suspension adds to a total of 143 ousted members, with 97 from the Lok Sabha and 46 from the Rajya Sabha. The opposition continues to challenge these suspensions, further intensifying the political landscape in the country.
