In a recent development, the Rouse Avenue Court has instructed the CBI to assign adequate staff for the inspection of documents at its headquarters. The judicial custody of former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia has been extended until the next hearing scheduled for January 19, 2024.
Document Inspection and Language Concerns
Special Judge M K Nagpal has granted the accused’s counsel time until January 15 to examine documents at the CBI Headquarters, emphasizing a compliance report to be filed post-inspection. Notably, the court has directed the CBI to provide translations in Hindi or English for documents in languages other than these. Responding to the counsel’s submission about documents in various languages, the court has instructed the CBI to supply DVDs containing documents to the accused’s counsel within a week.
Proceedings Delay and Compliance Report
Expressing concern over the delay caused by frequent applications seeking document supply, the court admonished the counsels. The CBI informed the court that a paginated set of documents for all three charge sheets had been provided to the counsel. The Investigating Officer (IO) submitted a compliance report stating that all unrelied documents and witness statements had been supplied and placed on record, with a list sent to the counsel of the accused persons.
Legal Background on Manish Sisodia
Manish Sisodia, the former Deputy CM, is facing charges in both a CBI case and a money laundering case. Charge sheets have been filed against Sisodia and other accused persons in both instances. Recently, the Supreme Court dismissed Sisodia’s bail petition, with previous applications rejected by both the High Court and the trial court.
Arrest and Allegations
Sisodia was arrested by the CBI on February 26, followed by an arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 9. The ED alleges that activities involving Sisodia have led to the generation of around Rs 622 crore as proceeds of crime. As the legal proceedings unfold, the accused remains in judicial custody pending further hearings.
