In a recent turn of events, popular social media influencer and YouTuber Kamiya Jani sparked controversy after a video surfaced of her speaking with BJD leader VK Pandian at Puri’s Jagannath Temple. The video evoked strong reactions from the BJP, accusing her of promoting ‘beef’ and calling for her arrest.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, a native of Odisha, expressed concern, stating that one should refrain from actions that hurt the sentiments of devotees of Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannath. He emphasized the significance of the deity in Sanatan Dharma and urged people not to play with the sentiments of the Odiyas and followers of Lord Jagannath.
The BJP’s Odisha unit demanded Kamiya Jani’s arrest, alleging that she violated the rules of the revered shrine by promoting ‘beef.’ Jatin Mohanty, the general secretary of the BJP in Odisha, called for the application of IPC Section 295, which deals with ‘hurting’ religious sentiments, and warned of legal action.
Mohanty also claimed that Kamiya Jani’s temple visit was filmed with a video camera, which is banned by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA). However, BJD MP Manas Mangaraj dismissed the allegations, accusing the Union Minister of needlessly stirring controversy. Mangaraj highlighted Kamiya Jani’s previous work on Hindu heritage and temples, suggesting that the BJP government had appointed her for such projects.
Mangaraj questioned Pradhan’s motive, asking whether it was simply intolerance or dissatisfaction with the progress on the Sri Mandir. He accused Pradhan of spreading fake news and trying to insult the intelligence of the people of Odisha.
The BJD leader posted screenshots of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Pradhan visiting the Jagannath Temple, implying that they had also shared their experiences on social media. The controversy continues to escalate, raising questions about religious sentiments, freedom of expression, and the role of influencers in promoting cultural heritage.
