Days after the delay, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Friday passed a resolution that called for more aid to be delivered to the civilians in the Gaza Strip but failed to demand an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. The 15-member council could pass the resolution after 13 voted in its favor, while permanent members, the United States and Russia abstained from voting that was delayed for days as efforts were on to avoid a veto by the US.
After the passing of the resolution, a relieved US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas Greenfield said “It was tough, but we got there.” She did not vote in its favor as the text failed to condemn Hamas. However, Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia called the resolution “Entirely toothless”.
United Nations Chief Antonio Guterres has repeatedly stated that the real problem with delivering aid was Israel’s ongoing offensive. The organization had also warned that Gaza is at risk of famine if war continues.
Notably, before voting for this resolution, the US had vetoed a Russian amendment that had called for an immediate suspension of the war. Out of the 15 members, 10 were in its favor, the US vetoed, while four abstained from voting.
The final resolution that passed on Friday culminated a week and a half of high-level diplomacy by the United States, and the United Arab Emirates on behalf of Arab nations, and other countries.
