In a recent interaction with Indian Statistical Service (ISS) probationers, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed his distress over a viral video featuring Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee allegedly mocking him. Despite being the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and holding a high public office, Dhankhar lamented that he, too, is not spared from ridicule.
During the ISS probationers’ session at his official residence in the national capital, Dhankhar shared his perspective, stating that despite being a “sufferer,” he remains steadfast in upholding his principles. He emphasized the importance of integrity and high ethical standards, acknowledging the pressures faced in public service.
Dhankhar highlighted the challenges he faces, mentioning the recent incident where Banerjee impersonated him during a protest over the suspension of Opposition MPs. The TMC Lok Sabha MP’s crude impression led to a political uproar, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing his ‘great pain’ to the Rajya Sabha Chairman.
Addressing the mimicry row, Dhankhar asserted that even in his constitutional role as the Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, he is not spared from criticism. Despite this, he remains unwavering in his commitment to the path of righteousness.
The controversy escalated further as Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was pictured recording the act on his phone, while fellow Opposition members laughed and clapped. President Droupadi Murmu expressed her dismay over the incident, emphasizing that elected representatives should express themselves within the norms of dignity and courtesy.
In response to the criticism, Banerjee issued a clarification, stating that he did not intend to hurt anyone. He questioned Dhankhar’s reaction, asking if such behavior was exhibited in the Rajya Sabha. The mimicry row has added fuel to the ongoing political tensions between the Treasury and the Opposition.
