In a response to the recent Poonch attack that claimed the lives of four army personnel, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has embarked on a visit to Rajouri and Jammu to assess the security situation. The ambush, which occurred last week near Thanandi in the Rajouri sector, left four jawans martyred and three others injured.
In light of the escalating attacks on Bharat troops, the Bharatiya Army is contemplating reinforcing its presence in the Poonch-Rajouri sector. Sources reveal plans to deploy an additional brigade-size formation, along with other supporting units, to strengthen the counter-terrorist operations in the region. This move aims not only to enhance the security grid but also to instill confidence among the local population.
Ahead of the Defence Minister’s visit, security has been heightened in Jammu. Reports suggest that the local police are bolstering their intelligence network to further fortify the region against potential threats.
Addressing the lapses in operations leading to troop casualties, the Army is conducting a Staff Court of Inquiry against the 13-Sector Rashtriya Rifles Commander, a Brigadier. The inquiry, headed by a Major General-rank officer, is investigating recurring lapses and also holds responsibility for the deaths of civilians in custody after the Dera ki Gali terror attack.
Indian Army Chief Gen. Manoj Pande visited the Poonch-Rajouri sector to assess ongoing operations. He received briefings from top commanders about the current situation and strategies to effectively target terrorists in the coming days. The Army Chief is expected to revisit the sector along with senior defence ministry officials later this week.
Amidst these developments, sources suggest that the Pakistan Army and its intelligence agencies aim to revive terrorism in the Poonch-Rajouri sector. The speculated motive is to pressure the Indian Army into reducing its troop presence on the northern border with China. The Indian Army, engaged in a military standoff with China for the past three years, has been focusing on the northern and eastern fronts since the 2020 Chinese aggression. Despite these challenges, security forces have successfully curtailed terrorist activities in the Kashmir valley.
