In a surprising turn of events in Bengaluru, an online campaign by the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike took a violent twist as over 5,000 activists targeted businesses, leaving Phoenix Mall of Asia and Phoenix Marketcity in Whitefield temporarily shut down. The violent actions were a response to the demand for Kannada signage on commercial establishments, a rule set by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike with a deadline of February 28, 2024.
The Phoenix Mall of Asia issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to state regulations and cultural sensitivity by incorporating Kannada signage. However, the violence resulted in significant losses for businesses during a crucial business season, with estimates running into crores of rupees.
Expressing disappointment, an insider from the retail industry criticized the perceived lack of police protection during the protests. Ramesh Chandra Lahoti, president of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry, emphasized the need for the government to act against such attacks to maintain Bengaluru’s global reputation.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike has mandated Kannada name boards for all commercial establishments by February 28, 2024. Retailers Association of India acknowledged the cultural sentiments but requested time for compliance, particularly regarding the rule for 60% Kannada content on name boards.
Individuals and businesses affected by the violence expressed their concerns. Abhishek Agarwal, running an AI consulting firm, highlighted the regional chauvinism and contemplated moving if such incidents continued. Former Infosys board member Mohandas Pai and Biocon chief Kiran Mazumdar Shaw criticized the soft-handed approach of the police and called for action.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar condemned the violence, stating that while protests are allowed in a democracy, the government will not tolerate lawlessness. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced a modification to the signage rule, directing officials to bring in an ordinance for 60-40 percent distribution of Kannada and other languages, respectively, and reiterated the deadline of February 28, 2024, for compliance.
