In a high-level meeting at the North Block, Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized the need to bolster counter-terrorism efforts in Jammu and Kashmir. Shah, along with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, NSA Ajit Doval, and other top officials, reviewed the security situation and discussed strategies for the complete elimination of the terror ecosystem.
During the meeting, Shah instructed security agencies to deploy appropriately in vulnerable areas, ensuring that all due procedures are followed during counter-terror operations. The focus was on strengthening the area domination plan to eradicate the threat of terrorism in the region.
The home minister applauded the efforts of security agencies and the Union Territory administration for a significant decline in terror-related incidents and an improvement in the law and order situation. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, a zero-tolerance approach against terrorism will be maintained, Shah affirmed.
The meeting comes on the heels of a recent terror attack in Poonch district, where five soldiers lost their lives. Additionally, the aftermath of the December 21 attack led to the alleged deaths of three civilians who were picked up by the Army for questioning, sparking public outrage.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Army Chief General Manoj Pande visited Poonch in response to these incidents. The Jammu and Kashmir administration has initiated compensation and job provisions for the families of the deceased civilians, and legal action on the matter is underway.
Despite sporadic violence in Jammu and Kashmir since the beginning of 2023, the review meeting highlighted a decline in terror-related incidents and infiltrations. However, officials attribute the recent uptick in violence to “desperate attempts from across the border” to revive terrorism in the region.
Last year, Rajouri, Poonch, and Reasi districts witnessed a series of encounters resulting in 54 casualties, including 28 terrorists and 19 security personnel. The majority of these incidents occurred as terrorists attempted to infiltrate across the border.
In summary, the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, is committed to a zero-tolerance stance against terrorism, with a renewed focus on strengthening counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir to ensure the safety and security of the region.
