In a significant development, the Supreme Court of Bharat has issued a notice to the Lok Sabha secretary general in response to Trinamool leader Mahua Moitra’s petition challenging her expulsion from the House last month. The court has granted three weeks for the official to file a reply, emphasizing the gravity of the matter.
However, despite the notice, the court has not allowed Mahua Moitra to participate in the Lok Sabha’s proceedings at this point in time.
Moitra’s expulsion from the Lok Sabha came after the ethics panel found her guilty of sharing her parliamentary login details with businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for alleged bribes.
The former MP defended her actions, stating that she shared her login credentials with the businessman to have his staff assist in typing out her queries on the Lok Sabha portal. Moitra vehemently denied any exchange of bribes between her and Hiranandani.
Following her expulsion, Moitra promptly moved the Supreme Court to challenge the decision. In her initial reaction, she contested the ethics panel’s authority to expel her and asserted the absence of evidence supporting the bribery allegations. Moitra also highlighted that the panel did not permit her to cross-examine Hiranandani and her former partner Jai Anant Dehadrai, the original complainant.
Hiranandani, in an affidavit to the panel, alleged that Moitra accepted gifts in return for allowing him to post questions on the Adani Group in the Parliament.
Undeterred by her expulsion, Moitra expressed her determination to continue fighting against the BJP. She criticized the party for not taking action against MPs making objectionable remarks and highlighted their lack of Muslim representation in Parliament.
In a separate development, advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai accused Moitra of conducting surveillance on him and lodged a complaint with the CBI. He emphasized the seriousness of the issue and vowed not to back down in the face of potential challenges.
The Supreme Court’s notice adds a new layer of legal scrutiny to the controversy surrounding Mahua Moitra’s expulsion, setting the stage for a thorough examination of the case.
