In recent weeks, two Hindu temples in California have fallen victim to acts of vandalism, with the latest incident occurring at Sherawali Temple in Hayward. Pro-Khalistan graffiti was found defacing the temple, mirroring a similar incident at the Swaminarayan temple in Newark, just weeks prior, where anti-India graffiti was discovered.
The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) reported the defacement at Sherawali Temple and shared a picture of the incident. In response to these attacks, the foundation emphasized the need for heightened security measures, urging temple leaders to install working security cameras and alarm systems. The rise in threats from Khalistan supporters has prompted concerns about the safety of Hindu places of worship.
The Hindu American Foundation took to social media, stating, “#Breaking: Another Bay Area Hindu temple attacked with pro-#Khalistan graffiti.” The foundation expressed its support for the affected temples, informing followers that they are in contact with local authorities, including @AlamedaPD & @CivilRights.
Drawing attention to the severity of the issue, the HAF encouraged temple leaders to download their temple safety guide, which outlines the importance of treating temple graffiti as a hate crime. The guide also underscores the significance of security measures in light of the growing threat from Khalistan proponents and general anti-Hindu sentiments.
In a related incident in December, the Swaminarayan temple in Newark faced a similar act of vandalism, with suspected pro-Khalistan activists defacing its exterior wall with anti-India graffiti. The Newark Police Service launched an investigation into the matter, categorizing it as a targeted act of vandalism against the Hindu community.
Jonathan Arguello, a police captain for the city of Newark, addressed the media during a press conference, condemning the act and assuring a thorough investigation. He emphasized the seriousness of the situation, declaring the incident as a hate crime based on the nature of the graffiti. Surveillance camera footage from neighboring residences is being examined to piece together the events leading to the defacement.
The U.S. State Department also weighed in on the issue, condemning the vandalism of the Shri Swaminarayan Temple in California. The department applauded the efforts of the Newark Police Department in ensuring accountability for those responsible for the acts of vandalism. The incidents have sparked concerns about the safety and security of religious institutions, prompting a collective call for vigilance and preventive measures within the Hindu community.
