Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina once again marked a historic win in re-election for a fourth term Sunday, officials said, following a boycott led by an opposition party she branded a “terrorist organisation”. The ruling Awami League “won more than 50 percent seats,” the Election Commission spokesman told media reports as counting continued.
Hasina’s win comes at a time when the country is witnessing rapid economic growth which earlier was plagued by grinding poverty. Although,Hasina’s government has also been accused of human rights abuses and sabotaging the opposition.
Results were not surprising as Hasina’s Awami League had won 204 of the 264 seats and her allied Jatiya Party won nine more. Analysts feel that Hasina who was brought in party veterans just to be a figurehead not only managed to hold grip of the party and also win against the political opposition.
The leader in a recent interview had also thanked Bharat for supporting her during the 1971 liberation war against Pakistan when her entire family had been wiped including her father and brothers. At the time, she sought refuge in Bharat and lived in exile for 5 years, which gave her shelter in 1975.
