The Assam Legislative Assembly is gearing up for its budget session, scheduled to commence on February 5, 2024. The state Governor, Gulab Chand Kataria, has summoned the assembly to meet at 9:30 am in the Assembly Chamber located in Dispur, the state capital. This marks a significant event, as it provides a platform for the Finance Minister to present the state budget for the fiscal year 2023-24, shedding light on the government’s financial planning and priorities for the upcoming year.
The winter session, initially slated for September, was canceled, making the upcoming budget session an eagerly anticipated event. The last legislative session, the Autumn session, commenced on September 11. With the budget session rescheduled, the government aims to address key financial matters and allocate resources in line with its developmental goals.
In a move towards infrastructure development, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to inaugurate the Brahmaputra Riverfront beautification project at Panbazar in Guwahati on January 20. The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government in Assam has undertaken the upgradation of the Brahmaputra riverbank as one of its flagship projects. This initiative seeks to enhance the aesthetic appeal and recreational spaces along the riverfront, contributing to the overall development of the region.
On a sustainable and innovative note, Assam launched its first app-based 100% electric and decentralized bike taxi service on January 7. Named ‘Bayu,’ the app is a collaborative effort between the Assam State Transport Corporation and Bikozee Ecotech, a local startup. The electric bike taxi service not only aligns with environmentally conscious practices but also aims to generate over 5,000 livelihood opportunities. This initiative reflects the state’s commitment to fostering economic growth, promoting entrepreneurship, and embracing eco-friendly transportation solutions.
As Assam prepares for these significant events, the budget session stands out as a crucial platform to outline the state’s financial roadmap, while infrastructure projects and sustainable initiatives contribute to the overall development and well-being of the region.
