In a groundbreaking move for gender equality and women empowerment, Delhi Police is set to showcase an all-women contingent during the 75th Republic Day parade on January 26. For the first time in its history, the marching contingent will exclusively comprise female personnel, with the leadership helmed by woman IPS officer Shweta K Sugathan. The 194-strong contingent, consisting of female head constables and constables, diligently practices daily at the Kartyava Path for this historic occasion.
This significant step aims to bridge the gap between the police force and the people of the northeastern states, as 80% of the participants hail from this region. Reflecting this commitment, the marching contingent is selected from the armed unit of the Delhi Police, and all participants are taking part in the parade for the first time, bringing an extra layer of excitement to the event.
Special Commissioner of Police (Armed Police) Robin Hibu highlighted the representation of northeastern states, emphasizing that the contingent will effectively represent and showcase the diversity of the people from the northeast within the Delhi Police.
Adding another feather to their cap, the Delhi Police will feature a women’s pipe band led by constable Ruyangunuo Kense, playing the “Delhi Police Song.” This marks a significant milestone in the inclusion of women in traditionally male-dominated roles within the force. Last year, a female pipe band was introduced, but this year’s inclusion of a female officer leading the band adds another layer of achievement.
The decision to include women participants in contingents, bands, and tableaux was encouraged by the defense ministry last year, resulting in this progressive and inclusive representation in the Republic Day parade. The all-women marching contingent is expected to be a center of attraction during the parade, drawing attention and admiration for its historic significance.
Delhi Police, known for its consistent participation since Bharat’s Republic Day in 1950, has been awarded the best marching contingent 15 times, with its motto “Shanti, Seva aur Nyaya” (Peace, Service, and Justice) resonating throughout its decades-long commitment to service and excellence.
