In a significant development on Thursday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organized a massive protest against the Bengal government’s perceived inaction regarding an attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials. The attack occurred during the ED’s raids at the premises of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sahajahan Sheikh in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas.
State BJP President Sukanata Majumdar, accompanied by other party leaders, led a march near Sandeshkhali to express their discontent. However, their movement was halted by the Bengal Police. In response to the escalating situation, Section 144 was imposed in the area to maintain law and order.
Majumdar criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led government, stating, “Law and order is a matter of the state. The Centre cannot do much in this. In the future, when the law and order of the state deteriorates further, the Centre will intervene.” He further accused the TMC government of corruption, asserting that the party has lost its moral right to remain in power.
The political turmoil in West Bengal unfolded after ED officers, conducting raids at TMC leader Sahajahan Sheikh’s residence in North 24 Parganas in connection with a Public Distribution System (PDS) case, were attacked by a mob of alleged TMC supporters. Even the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel accompanying the ED officials were reportedly mishandled.
The ED released a statement revealing that three of its officers sustained serious injuries during the attack and had to be admitted to a hospital. The assault occurred when the ED team attempted to search Sahajahan Sheikh’s house in Sandeshkhali, and a mob of 800-1000 people gathered, creating a chaotic and violent situation.
The incident has further heightened political tensions in West Bengal, with the BJP accusing the TMC of orchestrating violence against central agencies. The imposition of Section 144 reflects the authorities’ concern over maintaining law and order in the region amid the escalating political unrest. The situation is evolving, and the clash between the BJP and the Bengal government underscores the complex political landscape in the state.
