In preparation for their campaign opener in the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024, the Italy women’s team, coached by Andres Mondo, is putting in intense and professional efforts. The team, led by co-captains Federica Carta and Sara Puglisi, arrived in Ranchi on January 4 and is set to face New Zealand on January 13, marking their first encounter in seven years.
Ranked 19th in the FIH World Rankings and placed in Pool B, Italy will have a challenging journey ahead. Following their opener against New Zealand, they are scheduled to play against the USA on January 14 and face India in their final Pool game on January 16.
Coach Andres Mondo, who took over the team in October, expressed confidence in the team’s preparation during a press conference. He highlighted the toughness of New Zealand as an opponent, emphasizing the need to withstand their initial pressure. Mondo acknowledged the challenges posed by the team’s ranking but assured that they are ready for the intensity of the upcoming games. The coach also mentioned that playing in front of a home crowd would be a source of motivation for the squad.
Captain Puglisi Sara shared insights into the team’s adaptation to new conditions, particularly the pitch in Ranchi. Despite a challenging first training session, the team has acclimatized to the pitch and is focused on controlling the ball and moving forward strategically. Sara identified penalty corner conversions as an area requiring attention but reassured that the team is putting in hard work to address this concern.
The FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers 2024 features other formidable teams in Pool A, including Olympic Silver medalists Germany, former Asian Games Champions Japan, Chile, and the Czech Republic. The top three teams from the tournament will secure a spot in the Paris Olympic Games 2024. As the Italian team braces for their challenges, the players are enthusiastic about the opportunity to compete at such a prestigious event and strive for Olympic qualification.
