In the scenic hills of Assam’s Dima Hasao district, the counting of votes for the 13th North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council elections is in full swing. The Bharatiya Janata Party or BJP has already clinched the Haflong seat, setting a positive tone for the party in this pivotal local governance body.
The election took place on January 8. The vote counting, which commenced at 8 am today, have been going on amid tight security with polling officials stationed at their designated locations, revealing BJP’s success in securing at least 10 seats, including Haflong.
Chief Executive Member Debolal Gorlosa expressed confidence in BJP’s potential to secure a minimum of 22 seats in the ongoing election.
With 22 constituencies under Dima Hasao, six candidates from as many constituencies have already won uncontested in this council election.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma actively campaigned in the region, pledging to enhance health facilities, improve connectivity, and transform the hill district into a thriving tourist destination.
He asserted the government’s initiatives in restoring connectivity post-landslide in 2022 and during the Covid pandemic, along with commitments to financial assistance for higher education and support for women under the Orunodoi scheme.
The Assam State Election Commission meticulously categorized 100 of the 280 polling stations as ‘sensitive’ and 27 as ‘very sensitive,’ underscoring the thorough planning and security measures to ensure a fair and peaceful election process.
As the counting unfolds, all eyes are on Dima Hasao, where the results will shape the future governance and developmental trajectory of this autonomous region nestled in the heart of Assam.
