In a significant development, leaders of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc convened virtually on Saturday to discuss key agendas, including seat-sharing arrangements and participation in the upcoming Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. The leaders are also expected to deliberate on the appointment of a convener for the alliance.
Prominent figures like Sharad Pawar, Chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), participated in the virtual meeting via video conferencing from Mumbai. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and DMK leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi joined the discussions remotely from Chennai. The meeting aims to foster collaboration among opposition parties to counter the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
A preliminary meeting between leaders of the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday evening laid the groundwork for the alliance. Held at the residence of Mukul Wasnik, the talks focused on seat sharing and were described by leaders from both parties as a positive step forward.
As the INDIA bloc gears up for the upcoming elections, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh revealed that the leaders will also discuss their participation in the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, scheduled to commence on January 14 in Manipur. The yatra is expected to cover various regions, with its starting point in Thoubal near Imphal.
Sharing insights about the upcoming meeting, Ramesh posted on X, “INDIA party leaders will be meeting over Zoom tomorrow, January 13th, 2024. They will review various issues like seat-sharing talks that have begun, participation in the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra that will begin from Thoubal near Imphal, the day after tomorrow, and other important matters. Badlega Bharat Jeetega INDIA!”
The INDIA alliance, comprising opposition parties, including the Congress, has come together to challenge the NDA, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as the nation approaches the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The alliance aims to prevent the NDA from securing a third consecutive term in office.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the NDA emerged victorious with 353 seats, while the UPA secured 91 seats, and other parties won 98. With the 2024 elections on the horizon, the political landscape in India is witnessing a significant reshuffling, setting the stage for a crucial electoral showdown between the NDA and the emerging INDIA bloc.
