In response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for cleaning up temples across the country, Union Minister Anurag Thakur took a hands-on approach by personally cleaning the premises of the Hanuman Temple at Connaught Place in Delhi on Tuesday. Thakur arrived at the temple in the morning and actively wiped the floors to set an example for others.
Addressing the media, Anurag Thakur expressed his concern about the prevailing mindset, stating, “The dustbin is kept on one side while the garbage has been thrown on the other side. I think this mindset needs to change.” The initiative comes as part of a nationwide cleanliness drive at temples, launched by BJP president JP Nadda on Sunday.
Notably, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also participated in the campaign, sweeping the floors of the Hanuman Setu temple in Lucknow during his visit for Army Day events. Singh emphasized that Prime Minister Modi had called upon all citizens to contribute to cleanliness in temples, marking his efforts under the #SwachhTeerth campaign.
The cleanliness drive, which began on Sunday, focuses on temples and will continue until January 22, coinciding with the Pran Pratishtha (consecration) of Ram Lala at the Ayodhya Ram temple. Senior BJP leaders, including Union ministers and Chief Ministers from various states, actively participated in the campaign by taking up brooms and mops to clean temples across the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself set an example on Friday by cleaning the premises of the Kalaram Temple in Maharashtra’s Nashik as part of the Swachchata Abhiyan campaign. Visuals showed the Prime Minister using a mop and bucket to clean the temple floor.
During his inaugural address at the 27th National Youth Festival in Nashik, PM Modi reiterated his call for cleanliness campaigns and urged citizens to participate in Swachhata activities at pilgrimage places and temples across the country. The focus is on preparing for the consecration ceremony of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, scheduled for January 22, where Prime Minister Modi is expected to attend the installation of the idol of Ram Lalla at the grand temple.
