Plane Hits Parked Aircraft at Japan Airport: Incident Overview

In a recent incident at New Chitose Airport on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, a Korean Air Lines plane reportedly scraped against a Cathay Pacific Airways aircraft. According to news agency, the incident occurred on Tuesday, creating a tense situation at the busy airport.

No injuries have been reported so far, providing a sigh of relief amid the potential dangers associated with such incidents. The broadcaster emphasized the importance of the situation, shedding light on the safety protocols in place to prevent accidents of this nature.

Cathay Pacific Confirms Collision

Cathay Pacific, one of the airlines involved in the incident, released a statement confirming the collision. The airline stated that one of its planes was “struck” by a Korean Air airliner. They clarified, “Cathay Pacific confirms that there was an incident involving a Cathay Pacific aircraft while it was parked at New Chitose Airport in Sapporo today (16 January). Our aircraft, which was stationary at the time with no customers nor crew onboard, was struck by a Korean Air A330 which was taxiing past.”

The clarification from Cathay Pacific provides insights into the circumstances surrounding the incident, assuring that the stationary aircraft had no passengers or crew on board during the collision.

The Korean Air plane involved in the incident was reportedly carrying 289 people at the time of the collision. Japanese media highlighted the potential risks associated with such events, underlining the need for thorough investigations into the cause of the mishap. The fact that the incident happened only two weeks after a separate collision at Tokyo’s Haneda airport raises concerns about air traffic safety in the region.

This incident follows closely on the heels of a collision between a Japan Airlines airliner and a coast guard plane on a runway at Tokyo’s Haneda airport. The frequency of such events within a short timeframe may prompt aviation authorities to reassess safety measures and protocols to prevent future accidents.

As investigations into the New Chitose Airport incident are likely underway, both airlines and aviation authorities will be closely scrutinizing the circumstances surrounding the collision to enhance safety standards and avoid similar incidents in the future.
