Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a passionate plea at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, asking leaders not to let Russia’s war in Ukraine become a “frozen” conflict. He highlighted Ukraine’s resilience against Moscow’s forces and called for support to bring about progress on the ground.
Zelensky, addressing the difficult questions many have about the war’s end, the possibility of a third world war, and negotiations with Putin, emphasized that any frozen conflict would eventually reignite. He advocated for providing Ukraine with more weapons to achieve a “just and stable” peace instead of repeating past attempts to freeze the conflict.
Stalled Progress and Stalemate in Ukraine’s War
Zelensky’s address marked nearly two years since Russia’s full-scale invasion. While Ukraine initially made gains in liberating cities, the hoped-for broader counteroffensive has not materialized. Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, head of Ukraine’s armed forces, warned of a “stalemate” in November, with a need for technological improvements to avoid a cycle of devastating losses and destruction.
Despite Ukraine’s challenges, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen commended Ukraine for exceeding expectations at the war’s outset. She highlighted Russia’s significant military, economic, and diplomatic failures, claiming it had lost roughly half of its military capabilities.
Distractions and Optimism Amidst Setbacks
The international focus on other conflicts, such as Israel’s war against Hamas, has diverted attention from Ukraine. With several countries facing elections, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen noted 2024 as “the biggest electoral year in history.” However, she expressed optimism about Ukraine’s achievements, emphasizing that Kyiv did not fall as feared, and Russia faced substantial losses.
Zelensky echoed this sentiment, stating that Ukraine began its defense when few believed in it, turning the tables so that now the world has stopped believing in Russia. Despite setbacks, both leaders highlighted Ukraine’s resilience and the need for continued international support to avoid a frozen conflict scenario.
