Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled the names of recipients for the State’s highest civilian honours, among whom Former Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, stands distinguished as the recipient of the Assam Baibhav Award 2023 in the field of Law and Justice.
Ranjan Gogoi, a seasoned legal professional who served as the 46th Chief Justice of India, commenced his legal career when he was enrolled as an advocate on August 28, 1978. His journey led to the appointment as a permanent judge of the Gauhati High Court on February 28, 2001.
Notably, during his tenure as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India, Gogoi presided over the historic verdict in the decades-old Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title suit, providing a significant resolution to a longstanding legal dispute.
Post his tenure as Chief Justice, Ranjan Gogoi transitioned to the political arena and currently holds the position of a Member of the Rajya Sabha. President Ram Nath Kovind nominated him for this role on March 16, 2020.
The Assam Baibhav Award 2023 in the field of Law and Justice recognizes Gogoi’s distinguished contributions to the legal landscape and his pivotal role in landmark judgments during his tenure as Chief Justice of India.
