In a significant development, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on his visit to Shillong, has once again expressed willingness to examine the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. This move comes after a BJP team, led by state president Rikman Momin, met with Shah to discuss the crucial matters of language inclusion, the implementation of the inner-line permit (ILP) in Meghalaya, and the opening of international trade routes to Bangladesh.
Shah, who arrived on Thursday, had previously given a similar assurance more than a year ago during his last visit to Shillong. The BJP team, which included Cabinet Minister AL Hek and party spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang, presented the issues to Shah, who patiently heard their concerns and committed to a thorough examination of all the matters at hand.
In addition to these promises, Shah extended an invitation to a delegation of church leaders from Meghalaya to join a meeting in Delhi. The discussions in this meeting will revolve around matters related to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act and the allocation of land in the National Capital Region to the KJP Synod.
Shah is set to chair the plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC), which will take place at the State Convention Centre on Friday. The meeting will see the participation of Chief Ministers Conrad K. Sangma, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Lalduhawma, and Prem Sing Tamang, among others. The NEC secretary, Moses Challai, is scheduled to present the action plan for 2023-24 and the progress of the NEC Vision 2047 document.
During the session, Secretary to the Ministry of DoNER, Chanchal Kumar, will brief attendees on the ministry’s activities. There will also be presentations by the NEC planning financial advisor and the DoNER joint secretary on key focus areas, such as investment policies, industry 4.0, logistics strengthening, and inter-regional trade.
Governors and chief ministers of northeastern states, who are members of the NEC, will address the plenary session. Union DoNER Minister G Kishan Reddy, the vice-chairman of the NEC, is also slated to speak. The session will conclude with an address by Shah, who serves as the chairman of the NEC, marking a significant step in addressing regional concerns and fostering development in the Northeast.
