Heavy breathing, continuous whispers, shaking head, muttering “witch hunt”- this is what all Donald Trump did while writer E. Jean Carroll was testifying in the Manhattan Courtroom against former US President, explaining how he wrecked her reputation. This dramatic event prompted US District Judge Lewis Kaplan to sternly warn Trump about his courtroom drama, cautioning him of facing expulsion from the trial in case “audible disparaging remarks” continue. Meanwhile, the E. Jean Carroll defamation case against Donald Trump is only one among the several legal battles he is facing which are threatening to spoil his political career ahead of the 2024 US Presidential Elections.
Writer Carroll, who is demanding $10 million from Donald Trump for damaging her reputation and calling her “a liar”, has accused the former US President of raping her in the mid-1990s in a department store’s dressing room. She publicly announced the accusations four years ago in a book excerpt, and since then Trump has been allegedly attacking Carroll.
Trump’s loud antics and whispering with the legal team were pointed out by Carroll’s lawyer, Shawn Crowley. Judge Kaplan made it clear that though Trump has all the rights to attend the trials of the case, it can be revoked too if his behavior continues to be disruptive or if he fails to adhere to the court rules.
Losing his patience, Kaplan warned that he might consider excluding Trump from the trial, adding that he is well aware that the Republican front-runner up in the 2024 Presidential elections wants this to be done. Throwing his hands up, Trump responded that he would “love it”.
The Manhattan courtroom drama took place on the second day of the trial in the defamation lawsuit filed by Carroll, who has sued Donald Trump twice since she came out publicly about the case.
In the first case, the jury found the former US President liable for sexually abusing Carroll, awarding her over $2 million in damages. While the current trial is focused on what damages Trump must pay to Carroll for defaming her after the book excerpt on the rape accusing Trump was out.
Interestingly, the drama intensified after Trump lashed out at Judge Kaplan during a press conference, labeling the judge as “abusive, rude, and a Trump-hating guy” after he denied the former US President’s request to delay the trial to allow him to attend his late mother-in-law’s funeral.
