In a significant address at the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Kampala, Bharat’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, tackled the pressing issue of the conflict in Gaza. Emphasizing the need for a sustainable solution to the humanitarian crisis, Mr. Jaishankar delivered Bharat’s National Statement, stating that “terrorism and hostage-taking are unacceptable.”
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, the minister called for a sustainable solution in Gaza that provides immediate relief to those most affected by the humanitarian crisis. He stressed the importance of all states involved in the conflict respecting international humanitarian law.
Mr. Jaishankar expressed concern that the conflict in Gaza should not escalate and spread within or beyond the region. Reiterating Bharat’s long-standing stance, he advocated for a two-state solution where the Palestinian people can live within secure borders, emphasizing the need to make this solution a reality.
The External Affairs Minister underlined the interconnectedness of global issues, noting that growth and progress depend on peace and stability. He cited the example of the impact of conflicts on a global scale, referring to the repercussions of the Ukraine conflict on fuel, food, and fertilizer supplies.
As the Non-Aligned Movement enters its seventh decade, Mr. Jaishankar called for boldness in seeking recognition and pressing demands. He encouraged collaboration and reinforcement among NAM member states, asserting that shared efforts can bring about positive global change.
Reflecting on the enduring strength and growth of the NAM, Mr. Jaishankar affirmed that “the voice of the NAM is here to be heard. The voice of the NAM is here to stay and to grow.” He concluded his address by sending a powerful message that underscores the significance of the NAM in today’s global context.
