In a recent display of swift and efficient response, the Indian Coast Guard successfully carried out a medical evacuation mission to rescue an Indonesian crew member facing health issues. The individual, experiencing stomach pain and a high fever, was safely evacuated from the Iranian-flagged vessel MV Wave 47, located 47 nautical miles South-West of Diu.
The operation was executed by the India Coast Guard Ship C-149 on January 19, as confirmed in a statement released by the Indian Coast Guard. After the successful rescue, the mariner was promptly transferred to a hospital for further medical attention.
This incident marks another instance of the Indian Coast Guard’s commitment to maritime safety and humanitarian efforts. It’s worth noting that such operations are not uncommon for the Coast Guard, highlighting their dedication to ensuring the well-being of seafarers in distress.
In a separate incident, the Indian Coast Guard demonstrated its rescue capabilities by swiftly responding to a distress call involving a grounded ferry near Namkhana, Kakdwip. On January 16, 2024, 182 pilgrims found themselves stranded after their ferry, MV Swasthya Sathi, ran aground due to poor visibility during their return from the Ganga Sagar Mela.
Upon receiving the distress call from the District Magistrate of South 24 Paraganas, the Coast Guard’s operations team immediately dispatched two Air Cushion Vehicles (ACVs), commonly known as hovercrafts, from Haldia and Sagar Island. These hovercrafts were sent to provide necessary assistance in rescuing the stranded pilgrims.
The Coast Guard’s quick response and deployment of resources underline their commitment to safeguarding lives at sea, especially during challenging situations like adverse weather conditions and unforeseen emergencies.
Adding to their recent accomplishments, the Indian Coast Guard Ship C-424 completed a medical evacuation mission earlier in January. Responding to a request from the Andaman administration, the ship successfully evacuated a 70-year-old patient from Afra Bay. The individual was experiencing difficulty in breathing and was brought to Campbell Bay for further medical management.
These series of successful operations highlight the Indian Coast Guard’s versatile capabilities in both medical evacuations and maritime rescues, reaffirming their crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of those navigating the seas.
