In the aftermath of the tragic killing of 23-year-old Takhellambam Manoranjan Singh in Manipur, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) has called for a 48-hour bandh across the state, heightening tensions in the violence-stricken region. The Bandh, in effect since Saturday at 5 am and lasting till January 22, was triggered by allegations that Singh was killed in an attack orchestrated by Kuki militants.
As Manipur marked its Statehood Day on January 21, the state found itself in mourning, grappling with the loss of Singh, a village guard. The JAC, formed in response to his killing, has presented a set of demands to Chief Minister N Biren Singh, giving a 24-hour ultimatum.
Residents of Kangchup reported more than seven killings on Kangchup Hill Range, further intensifying the volatile situation. In response to the perceived lack of positive action from the government within the stipulated deadline, the JAC called for the bandh and outlined specific demands to address the root causes of the unrest.
The JAC’s demands include the removal of what they deem ineffective Central forces, the deployment of state forces, withdrawal of the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement between Kuki militant groups and the government, and the implementation of the National Register of Citizens in Manipur. Additionally, the committee urged the formation of village protection forces and requested additional security along the Kangchup Hill Range, an area predominantly inhabited by the Metei community.
In an effort to avoid further escalation, the government has pledged swift action. Chief Minister N Biren Singh assured that steps are being taken to address the concerns raised by the JAC. The government emphasizes its commitment to maintaining peace and security in Manipur, acknowledging the gravity of the situation.
The impact of the bandh is evident in the closure of markets and businesses, including the iconic Ima Keithel, while public transport in Imphal valley remains suspended in solidarity with the JAC’s strike. The committee clarified that essential services and religious events are exempted from the bandh, emphasizing its intention to minimize disruptions to daily life.
Manipur has been grappling with ethnic tensions since May of the previous year, resulting in over 180 lives lost. The government faces the complex challenge of addressing the underlying issues and restoring harmony among the diverse communities residing in the state.
