In a heated exchange of words, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticized Congress MP Rahul Gandhi during the ongoing ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ in the state. Sarma went on to call Gandhi a ‘Ravan’ and urged to focus on discussing Lord Ram instead. This remark comes amidst the ‘pran pratishtha’ ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, presided over by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
As part of his yatra, Rahul Gandhi faced obstacles in Assam, with authorities preventing him from visiting the Sri Sri Sankardeva Satra in Nagaon district and holding a meeting in Morigaon district. Gandhi, along with other party leaders, staged a dharna in protest, questioning whether PM Modi would now decide who can visit a temple and when.
Gandhi, who had planned to visit the birthplace of 15th-century social reformer Srimanta Sankardeva, expressed frustration as he was stopped at Haibargaon without receiving clear reasons from the authorities. The Congress leader emphasized that they only wanted to offer prayers at the temple and accused PM Modi of pressuring the Assam government to obstruct his visit.
In response, Gandhi asserted his belief in the philosophy of Srimanta Sankardeva, emphasizing the idea of bringing people together and avoiding the spread of hatred. He referred to the iconic saint as a guru who provides direction, expressing his intention to pay respects during his visit to Assam.
The situation highlights the growing political tensions in Assam as the Congress leader faces challenges during his Nyay Yatra, bringing into question the interference in temple visits and sparking debates on religious freedom and political influence in the region.
