In a significant announcement on Monday, the Rashtrapati Bhavan declared that the late socialist leader and former Bihar chief minister, Karpoori Thakur, will be posthumously awarded the prestigious Bharat Ratna. Thakur, affectionately known as ‘Jannayak’ by his followers, played a pivotal role in championing the cause of social justice and empowering backward castes.
Karpoori Thakur, born on January 24, 1924, actively participated in the Quit India Movement against the British regime, facing imprisonment for his convictions. He entered electoral politics in 1952 and remarkably never faced defeat in any subsequent elections throughout his career.
One of Thakur’s most impactful contributions was in 1978 when he paved the way for reservations for backward castes in government services in Bihar. This pioneering move set the stage for the nationwide implementation of the Mandal Commission report in 1990, furthering the cause of social equality.
Having served as the chief minister of Bihar from December 1970 to June 1971 and then again from December 1977 to April 1979, Thakur left an indelible mark on the state’s political landscape. His leadership was characterized by a commitment to the welfare of the marginalized sections of society.
Karpoori Thakur’s untiring efforts towards social justice and equality earned him widespread respect. His demise on February 17, 1988, marked the end of an era, but his legacy continues to influence the socio-political fabric of Bihar.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his delight at the decision to confer the Bharat Ratna on Karpoori Thakur. In a social media post, the Prime Minister acknowledged Thakur’s role as a beacon of social justice and a champion for the marginalized. The timing of this honor, coinciding with Thakur’s birth centenary, adds significance to the recognition of his enduring contributions to the empowerment of the underprivileged.
