In a devastating incident in the Belgorod region, a Russian Ilyushin-76 military transport plane crashed, leaving many questions unanswered. The crash occurred near the village of Yablonovo, and videos circulating on social media depicted the plane’s descent followed by a fiery explosion.
Russian news agency Ria Novosti reported that the plane was carrying a total of 74 individuals, comprising six crew members, three escorts, and, notably, 65 captured Ukrainian army servicemen. The purpose of their transport to the Belgorod region was allegedly for a planned exchange. The Russian defense ministry provided this information and stated that a special military commission is en route to the crash site. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
Belgorod’s regional governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, acknowledged the incident but refrained from providing additional details. Speaking to AFP, Gladkov mentioned the activation of an investigation team and emergency services at the crash site, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. He adjusted his working schedule to travel to the affected district.
The Ilyushin-76 military transport aircraft involved in the crash is designed for the airlifting of troops, cargo, military equipment, and weapons. With a normal crew of five people, it has the capacity to carry up to 90 passengers, according to Reuters.
The Kremlin, in response to the tragic event, stated that it is actively looking into the situation. As details continue to emerge, the focus remains on understanding the circumstances leading to the crash and the fate of those on board.
This incident comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with Belgorod region experiencing attacks, including a missile strike in December that claimed the lives of 25 people. The crash adds another layer of complexity to an already delicate situation, emphasizing the need for a thorough and impartial investigation to uncover the truth behind this tragedy.
