Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots left spectators in awe with a breathtaking fly-past during the grand ceremonial parade of Bharat’s 75th Republic Day celebrations at Kartavya Path. The air show, part of the ‘Platinum Republic Day’ function, featured 54 aircraft, including the Prachand Helicopter and three Rudra helicopters. Notably, the ‘vertical charlie’ manoeuvre by a Rafale aircraft, with rolls while flying vertically, added to the spectacle.
The Prachand helicopter, led by Lieutenant Colonel Ranvir Grewal, along with three Rudra helicopters, showcased the prowess of the indigenous Multi-Role Combat Helicopter, known for its ground attack and aerial combat capabilities. The ‘Prachand’ formation, featuring Apache helicopters and ALH Mk1V aircraft, flew in an impressive five-aircraft ‘arrow formation.’
As a tribute to the historic Tangail airdrop during the 1971 war, the Indian Army recreated the Tangail formation during the Republic Day celebrations. The heritage aircraft Dakota, flanked by two Dornier Do-228 aircraft, used a blend of Aviation Turbine Fuel and Biofuel for the fly-past.
The Republic Day parade highlighted the weaponized variant of the ALH Dhruv helicopters, known as the Rudra, often referred to as a flying tank. The military technology display included various formations such as ‘Arjan,’ ‘Netra,’ ‘Varuna,’ and ‘Bheem,’ featuring a diverse range of aircraft and formations.
The climax of the fly-past included formations like ‘Vajraang’ with six Rafale aircraft in ‘Marut’ formation, and ‘Trishul’ featuring three Su-30 Mk-I aircraft flying at 900 kmph. The air show concluded with a Rafale aircraft performing the ‘Vertical Charlie’ manoeuvre and executing multiple turns.
Earlier in the Republic Day parade, the Indian Air Force marching contingent, led by Squadron Leader Rashmi Thakur, showcased precision and discipline. The IAF tableau, themed ‘Bharatiya Vayu Sena: Saksham, Sashakt, Atmanirbhar,’ depicted the IAF’s expanded reach, humanitarian aid efforts, and the incorporation of space technology in operations.
President Droupadi Murmu unfurled the national flag at Kartavya Path, commencing the celebrations. The President, accompanied by French President Emmanuel Macron, witnessed the fly-past and received a 21 Gun Salute. The special return of the ‘Traditional Buggy’ after 40 years added a historic touch to the event, marking the 250th anniversary of the President’s Bodyguard.
