In a recent development, SpiceJet, led by promoter Ajay Singh, has successfully completed the first tranche of capital infusion, securing an impressive Rs 744 crore through the issuance of securities on a preferential basis. Despite facing challenges, the airline is optimistic about its growth prospects and plans to utilize the funds strategically.
The decision was made during a board meeting held on January 25, where the Board of Directors approved the allotment of shares and warrants on a preferential basis. The raised capital is earmarked to play a crucial role in financing various operational expansion initiatives, including fleet enhancement, route network expansion, and technological advancements.
SpiceJet is set to complete another tranche of equity and warrants raise from remaining subscribers. The company has requested additional time to finalize this process, as approved by shareholders on January 10, 2024. This extension is attributed to limited banking days arising from long weekends during the intervening period.
Ajay Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of SpiceJet, expressed satisfaction with the completion of the first tranche of preferential allotment. He highlighted the investors’ confidence in SpiceJet’s growth prospects and affirmed the company’s commitment to completing the further allotment process progressively.
According to Singh, the fund infusion is expected to open new avenues for SpiceJet, leading to a more cash-efficient operation, expanded fleet, and network. This strategic move comes as the airline aims to position itself for sustained growth and success in the competitive aviation industry.
SpiceJet reported a notable improvement in its financial performance, reducing its net loss to Rs 428 crore in Q2 FY2024, compared to the net loss of Rs 835 crore in Q2 FY2023. The positive financial trend indicates the effectiveness of the airline’s strategies and measures taken to navigate through challenges.
Currently operating about 250 daily flights to 48 destinations within India and internationally, SpiceJet boasts a diverse fleet that includes Boeing 737 Max, Boeing 700, and Q400s. Launched in May 2005, the airline continues to evolve and adapt to market dynamics, with the recent capital infusion expected to bolster its position in the aviation sector.
