In a recent public gathering in Kakdwip, South 24 Parganas in Bengal, Union Minister Shantanu Thakur declared that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) would be implemented across Bharat within the next seven days. Thakur, who is also the BJP’s Lok Sabha MP from Bangaon, Bengal, echoed the sentiments expressed earlier by Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the implementation of the controversial CAA.
Thakur’s statement comes in the wake of Amit Shah’s assurance last December that the BJP-led central government is determined to implement the CAA, and “no one can stop it.” Shah’s remarks were directed towards West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, a vocal opponent of the CAA. Thakur, addressing the public in Bengali, emphasized the nationwide enforcement of the CAA and echoed the sentiments expressed by Shah on the matter.
During a significant rally at Kolkata’s iconic Esplanade, Amit Shah had vehemently criticized Mamata Banerjee on various fronts, including issues of infiltration, corruption, political violence, and appeasement. He urged the people to overthrow her government in Bengal and vote for the BJP in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections. Shah also clarified that the intended beneficiaries of the CAA have the same right to citizenship as anyone else.
The CAA, passed in both Houses of Parliament and receiving the President’s assent in 2019, has been met with widespread protests and strong opposition from various quarters across India. Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress have been particularly vocal in their resistance to the CAA, leading to a significant political divide on the issue.
Earlier this month, news agency PTI reported that the rules for the implementation of the CAA are ready with the central government and are expected to be notified “much before” the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections. An official also revealed that the online portal for CAA applications is in place, and the entire process will be digital. Applicants are required to declare the year of entry into India without travel documents, and no additional documents will be sought from them, as per the official statement.
