As Israel braces for an upcoming rain and winter storm, the Ministry of Welfare and Social Security has taken a proactive step to ensure the safety of homeless individuals. The ministry has announced plans to offer accommodations in hotels across the country to those in need of shelter during the severe weather conditions expected until the end of the week.
According to guidelines provided by the ministry to social services departments in local authorities, the cost of lodging in hotels will be covered up to 468 shekels (USD 130) per person for a duration of up to three nights. Any extension beyond this period will require approval from the ministry’s supervision.
In response to the ministry’s directive, local authorities are currently in communication with hotels in their respective areas. This coordination aims to facilitate the immediate evacuation of individuals living on the streets whenever necessary, ensuring a swift response to the impending weather challenges.
Yanon Aharoni, the Director General of the Ministry of Welfare and Social Security, emphasized the significance of this initiative. He stated, “We are prepared and ready to respond to homeless people during the cold storm days. Staying on the street during this time is a life-threatening situation.” Aharoni highlighted the ministry’s commitment to guiding welfare teams in actively identifying homeless individuals and suggesting that they evacuate to fully-funded shelters and hotels.
This proactive approach seeks to prevent a social risk from escalating into a real-life threat. By providing comprehensive support and accommodations, the Ministry of Welfare and Social Security aims to ensure the safety and well-being of those who may otherwise be exposed to the harsh conditions of the impending rain and winter storm.
