In a recent announcement, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has declared elections for 56 Rajya Sabha seats across 15 states. The polls are scheduled to take place on February 27, 2024. The decision was communicated through an official press note titled “Biennial Elections to the Council of States to fill the seats of members retiring in April 2024.”
According to the press note, the term of office for 56 members of the Council of States elected from these states is set to expire with their retirement in April 2024.
The state of Uttar Pradesh tops the list with the highest number of members, with 10 individuals set to retire on April 2, 2024. Maharashtra and Bihar follow closely, each having 6 members retiring on the same date. West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh are next in line, with 5 members from each state set to retire on April 2, 2024.
Karnataka and Gujarat will witness the retirement of 4 members each on April 2, 2024, according to the press note.
In further detail, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, and Rajasthan will see three members from each state retiring. Notably, members from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are slated to retire on April 2, 2024, while those from Odisha and Rajasthan will retire on April 3, 2024.
Additionally, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand will each witness the retirement of one member on April 2, 2024.
This upcoming round of Rajya Sabha elections is anticipated to bring about significant changes in the composition of the upper house, as new members are elected to fill the seats vacated by those retiring in April 2024.
